Banana

The banana is the classic 'artistic fruit' with an inspiring shape and unique peeling mechanism. In this work the compliment between the blue background and the warm yellow colour of the banana is visually striking and stands out well on a plain coloured wall.

My childhood memory of these fruit includes the dark blue, oval, 'Fyffes' sticker that seemed to be on every banana. This was the obvious element in this work to replace with the pāua shell cut in the same shape as the branding label.

Having a retail label stuck on a banana does seem a little out of place on such a naturally aesthetic food shape. The pāua shell replacement challenges this addition by being in an unnatural shape, but made of of an incredibly attractive natural material. A beautiful addition to an artistic fruit.

Dimensions	500 mm x 500 mm
Production	Solid wooden frames with composite layers that are hand painted with acrylic and oil-based paints. Pieces of thin shell are added as inlay details, and clear epoxy resin used to provide visual emphasis.
