6. Seeking a spiritual experience |
|
|
|
"Most people don't come to church looking merely for a few new gospel facts or to see old friends, though all of that is important. They come seeking a spiritual experience. They want peace. They want their faith fortified and their hope renewed. They want, in short, to be nourished by the good word of God, to be strengthened by the powers of heaven."
Jeffrey R Holland
"A Teacher Come from God", Ensign, May 1998, 26
Questions
How can we feel 'strengthened by the powers of heaven?'
What do you do to draw closer to and properly worship on the sabbath?

Exodus 31:13, 16-17
Sabbath • Sunday • Weekend • Day
Jesus Christ
Exodus 31:13, 16-17. Mosiah 18:23
Questions
What does it mean that the sabbath is a 'sign' between us and the Lord?
8. What sign do I want to give? |
|
|
|
"How do we hallow the Sabbath day? In my much younger years, I studied the work of others who had compiled lists of things to do and things not to do on the Sabbath. It wasn't until later that I learned from the scriptures that my conduct and my attitude on the Sabbath constituted a sign between me and my Heavenly Father. With that understanding, I no longer needed lists of dos and don'ts. When I had to make a decision whether or not an activity was appropriate for the Sabbath, I simply asked myself, 'What sign do I want to give to God?' That question made my choices about the Sabbath day crystal clear."
Russell M Nelson
"The Sabbath Is a Delight", Ensign or Liahona, May 2015, 130)
Questions
How can asking ourselves "What sign do I want to give God?" help us make better choices?
How does keeping the Sabbath day holy affect the other days of the week?
9. A sacred moment |
|
|
|
"Partaking of the sacrament provides us with a sacred moment in a holy place."
L Tom Perry
"As Now We Take the Sacrament", Ensign or Liahona, May 2006, 39
Questions
How might this idea of 'a sacred moment' and a 'holy place' influence our thoughts and actions?
10. The purpose of the sacrament |
|
|
|
"And it came to pass that Jesus commanded his disciples that they should bring forth some bread and wine unto him. And while they were gone for bread and wine, he commanded the multitude that they should sit themselves down upon the earth. And when the disciples had come with bread and wine, he took of the bread and brake and blessed it; and he gave unto the disciples and commanded that they should eat..."
Jesus Christ
3 Nephi 18:1-11
Questions
What did the Saviour teach about the purpose of the sacrament?
What do you do to remember the Saviour while partaking of the sacrament?
11. Always remember him |
|
|
|
"O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it; that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him, and keep his commandments which he hath given them, that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen."
Moroni
Moroni4:3, 5:2
Questions
What could happen if we fail to 'always remember him?'
12. He again administered the ordinance |
|
|
|
"And he said unto them: He that eateth this bread eateth of my body to his soul; and he that drinketh of this wine drinketh of my blood to his soul; and his soul shall never hunger nor thirst, but shall be filled."
Nephi
3 Nephi 20:3-9
Questions
What does it mean that our souls 'shall never hunger nor thirst, but shall be filled?'
How has the sacrament 'satisfied' you?
13. Concentrate on worship |
|
|
|
"During sacrament meeting - and especially during the sacrament service - we should concentrate on worship and refrain from all other activities, especially from behavior that could interfere with the worship of others. Sacrament meeting is not a time for reading books or magazines. Young people, it is not a time for whispered conversations on cell phones or for texting persons at other locations. When we partake of the sacrament, we make a sacred covenant that we will always remember the Savior. How sad to see persons obviously violating that covenant in the very meeting where they are making it."
Dallin H Oaks
"Sacrament Meeting and the Sacrament", Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2008, 18-19
Questions
What could you differently as you follow the counsel from President Oaks?
